As the title suggests, this post isn’t focused on travelling and discovering new places. In this post I’m interested in what are travellers’ routines when they got back home. What is the first thing they do upon arrival? What they missed most? And what are their feelings after a new adventure?
So I’ve asked fellow globe trotters and plane hoppers how does it look like when they come home. Here is what they say.

Viktoria from Chronic Wanderlust

What are the first things you do after returning from a trip?

If he is not travelling with me, the first thing when the plane lands in Austria is to call my boyfriend. Second: have some tap water – I swear it has the best taste! Third: Hug my dog and be happy having it made home safely again.

What do you miss the most while you are away and why?

When I’m travelling I try to focus on travelling itself and don’t think to much about things that I miss back home. If I’d still had to pick something it would probably be healthy breakfasts and safety standards as in Austria.

What are your feelings soon after coming home?

I’m intoxicated with chronic wanderlust, so I either look up flights or pack my bags for the next adventure! My feelings are mostly pure happiness – happy having experienced something new and happily looking forward to new trips!

Alice from Teacake Travels

What are the first things you do after returning from a trip?
I’m an English chick who is easily pleased. I feel like a different version of Alice after travelling around Asia for 5 years. Back in London however, there’s only one thing I need. Tea!  I pop the kettle on, recover my favourite cup from it’s resting place and eagerly wait. The minute that milky brew touches my lips, waves of happiness rush through me and I feel like singing ‘God Save the Queen’.

El Nido Sunset, Philippines

Perched on a bench, with some local dogs and a Filipino Avon Lady, I snapped this shot in El Nido, Palawan, Philippines.

What do you miss the most while you are away and why?
People say ‘You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone’ and it’s relentlessly true. What I miss is random. I miss watching breakfast TV. I miss drinking pints of bitter, jet black beer in crusty moth-eaten pubs.  I miss hearing southeast London slang. I miss Sunday Roasts. I miss going to the supermarket. I miss Christmas.  It’s basically people, food and drink!

What are your feelings soon after coming home?
It’s contentment: a warm, fuzzy, familiar, safe feeling. Give or take five days though and that feeling turns into an urgency. An itch. Boredom, eagerness, curiosity and wanderlust start to scream out and before you know it, I’m off again.

Hannah from That Adventurer Blog

What are the first things you do after returning from a trip?

When I return from a big trip the first thing I do is get the bath running. I love taking a nice long soak to relax aching muscles after days, weeks or months on the road. It’s pretty rare you’ll get the opportunity to take a relaxing bath when you’re travelling so it’s one of the home comforts I miss when I’m away even though I don’t take them very often when I am at home!

Amazon river, Peru

This photo was taken along the Amazon river on my way for a home stay in the tiny community of El Chino right in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. From Iquitos we took a motorised canoe for 4 hours along the river until we arrived at El Chino.

What do you miss the most while you are away and why?

When I was travelling around South America I missed silly things like knowing that what you pick up in the supermarket is a banana and not a plantain or an apple banana, or something else! I also missed being able to drink water straight from the taps without having to worry about iodine solutions or remembering to buy bottled water. It’s a luxury we take for granted and I really miss it when it’s not there!

What are your feelings soon after coming home?

My first feeling soon after coming home is the dread of returning to an office! I enjoy being back for a couple of days and then I’m itching to get going somewhere new! I love the excitement of being somewhere completely different from what you’re used to. Although you can sometime feel out of your depth when travelling, I love the challenge of working out a new language, customs and directions in an exciting new place!

Victoria from The Freedom Travellers

What are the first things you do after returning from a trip?

The first thing we do when we get home after a long trip is drop our bags at home, shower, change and head to our favourite cafe. We have a number of different favourites so it really depends on what we fancy at the time. A good coffee and brekkie is the first thing we want to get stuck into when we arrive back home!

Victoria from The Freedom Travellers on her most recent trip

What do you miss the most while you are away and why?

Our bed. We have the most amazing bed. It’s like sleeping on a cloud. Moving from hotel to hotel you can’t always guarantee a great night’s sleep so coming home to our own bed is the best! When we travel, we usually Airbnb our place and the reviews from people always mention how fantastic our bed is.

What are your feelings soon after coming home?

It’s great to return home, particularly when you live in an amazing country like Australia. There’s nothing like heading to the beach, soaking in the sun and catching up with friends and family. We’ll spend some time reminiscing about our latest travels, looking back happy memories while uploading photos and video footage is always fun too. Main thing is we’re always happy to be home… but still looking ahead to our next trip! The benefit of travelling a lot is there’s always another trip not too far ahead… we feel very fortunate as not everyone has that luxury.

Victoria and Elaina from The Freedom Travellers

About Victoria

We’re a couple who have a serious addiction to travelling the world. We decided not so long ago that life was about more than sitting behind a desk for 40+ hours a week. We wanted to explore and experience amazing things all over the world. So that’s exactly what we decided to do! Despite the fact that we live, work and travel together (some people think we’re crazy!) the two of us are in fact very different. Guess that’s why it works so well! We hope to inspire others to step outside their comfort zone and take a few risks… your dreams depend on it!

Erin from Traveling Thru History

What are the first things you do after returning from a trip?

Sleep? lol. We normally do evening flights and get home fairly late, so the first thing we do is haul the luggage upstairs, leave it in the hall, take quick showers and go to bed… after playing with my cat for a few minutes. Trips are fun and always worth taking, but there’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed.

What do you miss the most while you are away and why?
My bed and my cat. I have scoliosis, so most hotel beds aren’t quite comfortable enough for me and the pillows don’t usually offer enough support, so I tend to get pretty stiff and sore by the time a trip is over. I always miss my cat because she sleeps with me every night. It just feels strange not having her curled up against my back at night.

What are your feelings soon after coming home?
I usually feel a mix of happiness at being back in familiar surroundings and a longing to be back adventuring and exploring. There’s nothing like experiencing new cultures and visiting new places.

Claudia from My Adventures Across The World

Whenever I travel for prolonged period of times, I do get homesick. Interestingly enough, I miss the little things the most. I miss the home cooked meals I have with my family every day, the fresh bread my father buys daily. I miss sleeping in a bed that is only mine, with clean, crisp and fresh nice cotton sheets. And I miss my cats, ever so much.

Valle de la Luna, Atacama, Chile.

My last trip took me to South America – Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. In this photo, I am showing some Sardinian pride waving my flag at Valle de la Luna, Atacama (Chile).

So, inevitably the first thing I do as soon as I walk in is searching for my cats, petting them, kissing them all over. Then, after some resting, I go for a swim at the local pool – training in a good swimming pool is one of the other things I truly miss when away. The first couple of days when I have just returned I feel almost lost and, for lack of a better word, weird: it is like I have changed so much in those few months, but nothing has changed back home.
